This Weekend at LACMA

June 17, 2016
Myra Hassaram, Marketing Coordinator

Grammy Award-winning band Yellowjackets lend us two of their finest members for Friday’s Jazz at LACMA. Set up your picnic blankets and grab a Jazz-themed cocktail from Stark Bar as you listen to the smooth sounds of saxophonist Bob Mintzer and keyboardist Russell Ferrante.

Wear your best kicks on Saturday and stroll through Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715–2015, featuring 300 years of men’s fashion—including shoes by Jeremy Scott for Adidas, Rick Owens, and more. From 1 to 5 pm, premium shoe care company Jason Markk will offer a complimentary sneaker cleaning and transform your scuffed soles back into pristine deadstocks. Then, trade those sneakers in for your dancing shoes and boogie on down to Hancock Park as Mongorama performs exciting Latin jazz sounds driven by Cuban charanga rhythms.

Take part in a special creative writing workshop on Saturday inspired by Agnes Martin. Martin’s restrained style underscores a deep conviction in the emotive and spiritual power of art and explores a spiritual, geometric, and spatial language through simple grids and striped canvases. Join poet Karen Holden as she guides a 90-minute gallery session responding to the artist’s practice.

Bring your kids to Andell Family Sundays the next morning for an Agnes Martin-inspired workshop. See how the artist uses grids to produce mesmerizing works, then make your own art to take home.

Also on Sunday, explore the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in a new light in the special talk "Spectacular Mexico: Transmissions from an Olympic Metropolis." Discover how graphics and branding in this particular event gave shape to modernist ideas and the media culture at large. The event is free and open to the public.

Cap off your weekend with a night of classical music. Pianist Daniel Schlosberg will perform at the Bing Theater. Schlosberg is the director of the Baltimore Lieder Weekend and has also served as a staff pianist for Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute vocal program.

Don't forget to donate your books on Sunday for the upcoming exhibition Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters. The first 500 book donors will each receive one complimentary general admission ticket to be used on the same day, June 19. We’re looking for your Frankensteins, your Bleak Houses, your Poes and your Lovecrafts. The drive is from 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday. We hope to see you there!
