This week, a series of programs will give you a deeper look at themes of the exhibiiton We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art, which explores the science, art, and cosmology of color in Mesoamerica.
On Wednesday, March 19, Evenings for Educators will give teachers and educators the chance to visit this fascinating exhibition and enjoy talks, hands-on art-making workshops, and dinner. Dinner and parking is also included with admission.
You can also join us for a two-day virtual symposium, presented online and open to all. The first session on Thursday, March 20, will highlight the perspectives of contemporary artists, exploring how they engage with the rich history and symbolism of color in Mesoamerica. Participating artists will delve into materiality, technique, and worldview, offering unique insights into how color continues to shape and inform art practice today.
The second session of the symposium on Friday, March 21, will focus on the scientific perspective, featuring experts who will explore the chemistry, materials, and technological methods behind the vibrant colors in Mesoamerican art. Speakers will discuss how scientific analysis has uncovered the origins and significance of these colors, shedding new light on the traditional techniques and cultural practices that continue to influence contemporary works.
