Mesoamerican artists held a cosmic responsibility: as they adorned objects with color, they quite literally made their world. To decode this significance, We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art, on view at LACMA through September 1, 2025, explores the science, art, and cosmology of color in Mesoamerica. The exhibition follows two interconnected lines of inquiry—technical and material analyses, and Indigenous conceptions of art and image—in search of the full richness of color at the core of Mesoamerican worldviews.

To further explore both the art and science behind the exhibition, LACMA is hosting a free virtual two-day symposium on Thursday, March 20, and Friday, March 21. The first session will highlight the perspectives of contemporary artists, exploring how they engage with the history and symbolism of color in Mesoamerica. They will delve into materiality, technique, and worldview through the lens of their practices, offering unique insights into how color continues to shape and inform art today. Participants include Porfirio Gutierrez, Carlos Barrera Reyes, Tatiana Falcón, and Jesús Lozano Paredes, moderated by We Live in Painting co-curator Diana Magaloni, Deputy Director, Program Director & Dr. Virginia Fields Curator of the Art of the Ancient Americas at LACMA. Co-curator Alyce de Carteret, Assistant Curator, Art of the Ancient Americas, will also give introductory remarks.

The second session will have a scientific perspective, featuring experts who will explore the chemistry, materials, and technological methods behind the vibrant colors in Mesoamerican art. They will discuss how scientific analysis has uncovered the origins and significance of these colors, shedding new light on the traditional techniques and cultural practices that continue to influence contemporary works. Participants include Diana Magaolini, We Live in Painting co-curator Davide Domenici, and John Hirx, moderated by Laura Maccarelli, Andrew W. Mellon Head Scientist at LACMA’s Conservation Center.
To join the symposium, RSVP for day one on Thursday, March 20, and day two on Friday, March 21, both beginning at 10 am PT. Spanish translations will also be available at the program. We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art is on view in the Resnick Pavilion through September 1, 2025.
