Queridos, Siempre en Mi Mente: Celebrating Día de los Muertos at Charles White Elementary School

November 6, 2025

Last weekend, LACMA’s gallery at Charles White Elementary School came alive with color, music, and community as we gathered to observe Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a colorful celebration of life rooted in honoring loved ones who have passed.

This year marks our inaugural ofrenda (altar) display, Queridos, Siempre en Mi Mente (Loved Ones, Always on My Mind), a heartfelt tribute to the beloved Mexican singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel by artist Gloria Wescott. The altar, which takes its title from Juan Gabriel’s songs “Querida” and “Siempre en Mi Mente,” is also joined by other altars lovingly created by local teachers, students, and community groups from around MacArthur Park. Bright paper marigolds, flickering candles, and personal offerings filled the space and, much like Juan Gabriel’s music, were a reminder of love, care, and remembrance.

During the Día de los Muertos celebration on November 1, guests of all ages joined in free art activities, including making paper flowers, designing bandanas with Craft Contemporary, face painting by Styles By Jean, and enjoying a Juan Gabriel–inspired playlist as well as a live performance by Classical Around Town.
