The Deer of Nine Colors (still), written and directed by Andrew Thomas Huang

This Week at LACMA

June 8, 2026

Andrew Thomas Huang’s The Deer of Nine Colors is a cyber-futuristic retelling of a Buddhist folktale in which a nine-colored deer saves a drowning merchant, only to be betrayed by the merchant’s greed. In Huang’s three-channel video, a Thai trans woman retraces her past life as a Schomburgk’s deer—an extinct species from Thailand—on a quest for her true name.

The exhibition is now open through Sunday, June 14, when you can also join us for a live performance collaboration between Andrew Thomas Huang and Kyoko Takenaka with music by OHYUNG, lighting design by Jay Swuen, and costumes by Lindsey Mortensen-Hirway.

Also get ready for Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity, which opens Sunday, June 14, and members see it first! Member Previews are Thursday, June 11, through Saturday, June 13. Not a member? Join now to explore meticulous craftsmanship, unwind among public art installations, and wander the new David Geffen Galleries.
