Works on paper on display for a council viewing

Celebrating the Study Center’s First Birthday

September 15, 2016
Sarah Newby, Collections Administrator, Works on Paper

Nearly one full year has flown by since the opening of LACMA’s Study Center for Photography and Works on Paper, a main point of access to the museum’s holdings of about 30,000 works on paper. Our eventful year in numbers:

A researcher at the Study Center
  • 25 individual researchers (including curators, artists, and historians) visited to study the collection in preparation for exhibitions and publications, scholarly lectures and papers, and as research for their art practice.
  • 21 high school and college classes visited to view photographs, prints, and drawings.
  • 20 students in summer art camp programs came face to face with photographs by the greats—Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Roy Decarava, Garry Winogrand, and Diane Arbus, among others.
  • 15 art viewings and tours for patron groups and other museum supporters.
  • The week-long Fredric Roberts Photography Workshop was in residence, culminating in a graduation and display of 25 student artworks.
  • LACMA’s crew filmed 4 episodes of Artists on Art over four days.
  • To date, 3,132 people visited a recently launched special weekend program that is in session during the run of Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters, which closes on November 27. On Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 to 4 pm, visit the Study Center to view a selection of works on paper from the collection and make del Toro-inspired drawings.

All told, in the last 12 months 4,430 people visited and 1,806 objects were brought out from storage and displayed in the Study Center.

The Andrew W. Mellon Summer Academy meeting in the Study Center

To celebrate this first year of increased public access, we are mounting a public viewing of work from the collection tomorrow. Stop by the Study Center all day on Friday, September 16, to see photographs, prints, and drawings chosen by LACMA curators that reflect the themes of the neighboring exhibition Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters. We can’t wait to see how the next year unfolds!

If you would like to schedule an appointment to view other works on paper, you can find details at lacma.org/studycenter.
