It’s finally that time—get excited for the opening of the David Geffen Galleries and Third Weekends at LACMA! From Thursday, April 16, through Sunday, April 19, you can experience a dynamic lineup of talks, screenings, and special events across the Resnick Pavilion, BCAM, and the Smidt Welcome Plaza, preceding the unveiling of L.A.’s newest landmark and our new home for the permanent collection beginning April 19.
Curious about how thousands of works of art found a home in the new building? Kicking off the weekend on Thursday, April 16, assistant director of art preparation Julia Latane and senior associate registrar Elspeth Patient will lead Installing LACMA’s Collection in the David Geffen Galleries, an online talk that will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the careful planning and work that went into it.

On Friday, April 17, engage with new exhibitions in exciting ways. Whether you’re enjoying a conversation and meditation in Austrian Expressionism and Otto Kallir, exploring the intersection of design and sports at The Art of Football Boots, or counting down to the upcoming World Cup with a screening of Pelé (2021) in conjunction with the exhibition Fútbol Is Life, you are sure to gain a deeper insight into the artwork on view.
On Saturday, April 18, unwind at a leisurely guided movement session while you explore works from LACMA’s modern art collection, and follow your poetic instincts at a generative writing workshop in the galleries of the exhibition Grounded. Later that evening, be sure to catch our screening of the award-winning film Memories of Love Returned (2024) followed by a conversation with actor, writer, filmmaker, and playwright Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine.

Round off the weekend on Sunday, April 19, by joining local poets outdoors on the Kendall Concourse for Pop-Up Poems, where you’ll create original poetry inspired by artworks in Collecting Impressionism at LACMA. You can also jump into some good old-fashioned Double Dutch at an energetic, joyful activation inspired by Village Square or join our gallery talk exploring the artistic friendships and networks that shaped the exhibition.
The line-up of events continues on Monday, April 20, with a relaxing sound bath in Realms of the Dharma, where singing bowls and resonant instruments will allow you to slow down and engage with the exhibition through mindful contemplation.
