Summer is heating up, but a sure-fire way to stay cool is stepping inside our air-conditioned galleries while exploring incredible works of art and some seasonal programs. For this month's Third Weekends at LACMA, we have a line-up of art-inspired events with something for everyone, this Thursday through Monday, August 13 through 17.
On Thursday, August 13, hear from artists rafa esparza, Shizu Saldamando, and Susan Silton at the talk Artists Take on L.A. Moderated by Lindsay Preston Zappas, they will discuss how Los Angeles shapes their work and communities, presented in the broader context of local artists represented in the museum’s collection.

Chill out on Friday in the exhibition at a morning Art + Meditation class in the exhibition Collecting Impressionism at LACMA. That evening, relax at this week's free Jazz at LACMA concert with the Joshua White Quartet as the sun sets.
Saturday starts outdoors with Let's Play: Chess at LACMA, combining art, play, and community in the shade of the David Geffen Galleries plaza level. In celebration of the reinstallation of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Garden, artist Liz Glynn will also lead a talk about her 2013 performance The Myth of Singularity (after Rodin), which involved recasting a number of the museum’s bronzes, resulting in pairs of sculptures throughout the green space.
Afterwards, step inside for a figure drawing workshop and sketch a live ballet dancer in the galleries of Collecting Impressionism at LACMA, join New York Times writer Sam Roberts as he leads a writing workshop and discusses his new book Are They Dead Yet?: The Art of the Obit, or learn about the 1922 silent film The Toll of the Sea at a screening featuring live piano accompaniment presented alongside the exhibition Fashioning Chinese Women.
Get moving on Sunday with a shadowboxing class in the David Geffen Galleries, gather in the sculpture garden with our friends from Heavy Manners Library for some peaceful outdoor drawing, or learn about the art of the Japanese tea ceremony at a tasting session. Heart of Dinner co-founders Moonlynn Tsai and Yin Chang will also lead a workshop and share recipes that can be used the next time you're asked to take part in a meal train at the latest in the Cooking with LACMA series.

For Mindful Monday, join us in the David Geffen Galleries during golden hour for a rare opportunity to experience artwork as light moves through the space. With meditation teacher and educator Mariko Tu, we'll explore works from LACMA’s permanent collection, focusing on Do Ho Suh’s Jagyeongjeon Hall, Gyeongbok Palace.
Of course, don't forget to check out all our current exhibitions, daily docent-led tours, and family-friendly Boone Children's Gallery activities too as you enjoy a welcome escape from the summer heat at LACMA.
