LACMA’s Academic Programs and Partnerships department, which bridges the museum with universities and colleges, creates clear pathways for learning, mentorship, and careers in the arts. One of the APP’s programs that establishes LACMA as not only a museum that displays art but that teaches through art—connecting education and professional opportunity—is the LACMA-ASU Master's Fellowship in Art History, a three-year program pairing rigorous academic instruction through traditional master’s-level coursework and thesis with on-the-job work experience.
LACMA-ASU fellows—who are current LACMA, ASU Art Museum, Pérez Art Museum Miami, or Heard Museum employees with a specific interest in making museums more inclusive and equitable—enroll in two courses per semester remotely, and fulfill language, professional development, and research requirements during the summer, while continuing in their current role at their respective museum. After completing the program, they receive a master’s degree in Art History from ASU.
In anticipation of the January 2026 application deadline for the LACMA-ASU Master's Fellowship in Art History, we will be hosting an informational session for LACMA staff who may be interested in applying to the program to learn more details from the ASU-LACMA director Jaclyn Roessel as well as Angélica J. Afanador-Pujol, Associate Professor of Art History Program and Director for Master of Arts and Ph.D. Programs, School of Art, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University.
If you’re interested in learning more, you can RSVP to join the virtual session on Thursday, October 30. There will also be an in-person information session on Thursday, November 13, details for which will be announced soon.
