In the 1780s, with the revival in the 1780s of interest in classical antiquity and the simultaneous proliferation of washable cotton fabrics, white became highly fashionable for women.

This English-style gown (robe à l’anglaise) of white cotton embroidered in a delicate floral pattern exemplifies the simplicity of the Neoclassical style.
