From conversations with artists and curators to live performances, music, films, and games, this month's Third Weekends at LACMA offers countless ways to connect with art and culture. Whether you’re visiting for an exhibition, a special program, or a family outing, there’s something for everyonr happening across the museum every day this Thursday through Monday.
Start on Thursday, September 17, at a conversation about Los Angeles with artist Guadalupe Rosales—whose new book East of the River: A Memoir of Los Angeles Girlhood chronicles her East Los Angeles upbringing—and two fellow art world veterans whose work has been equally shaped by the city, Carolina Miranda and Pilar Tompkins Rivas. Later that evening, LACMA Live: Native Voices' The Space Between Labels will premiere an original performance created by the nation’s premier Native American theater company, in response to the reimagined installation of LACMA's permanent collection in the David Geffen Galleries.
On Friday, join designer and stylist OLIMA and curators David Bardeen and Clarissa Esguerra in the galleries of Collecting Impressionism at LACMA to discuss the exhibition's costumes and depictions of fashion at the first program in the series Queering the Collection. Afterwards, stay for a free Jazz at LACMA concert with the 17 Big Band to start your Friday night on the right note.
Saturday will be a day of play with both a Chess at LACMA session and Mahjong Night! You can also hear from artist Christina Quarles at a conversation with LACMA’s Naima J. Keith and curator Diana Nawi about the artist’s practice, the ideas shaping her approach to painting, and her work on view in the W.M. Keck Education Center, or catch the second performance of Native Voices' The Space Between Labels.
