This Weekend at LACMA

Friday evening Jazz at LACMA plays host to the Angel City Jazz Festival. Celebrating cutting-edge jazz, the festival features established artists as well as emerging talent, including the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble. Make a movie night and attend the premiere screening of Soft Fiction, experimental filmmaker Chick Strand’s crowning 1979 work. The event includes a conversation with filmmakers Amy Halpern and Johanna Demetrakas, moderated by Gustavo Turner. Saturday’s screening of Legend is for LACMA Film Club members only.

 In the galleries, Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada presents a survey of the pivotal California artist who breathed new life into found scraps. The exhibition will reopen October 10 for an extended run. African Textiles and Adornment: Selections from the Marcel and Zaira Mis Collection features brilliant color, bold patterns, and intriguing symbols found in the dress of African societies from around the continent.

Tours of the collection include a walkthrough of the newly opened Frank Gehry retrospective on Saturday morning and a look at Modern Art at 2 pm on Sunday. Learn more about the famed architect during Sunday’s talk Gehry and Art: Irving Lavin and Frank Gehry in Conversation. The event is free and a standby line will form beginning at noon. Families can enjoy the weekly artmaking workshop, Andell Family Sundays, at 12:30 pm., Lastly, Sundays Live presents pianist John Blacklow and cellist Clive Greensmith to the Bing Theater stage at 6 pm.
