This Weekend at LACMA

May 27, 2016

Visit LACMA over Memorial Day weekend! Member Shopping Days run through Sunday, while admission to LACMA is free on Monday, courtesy of Target.

The weekend kicks off at 6 pm on Friday with a free concert at the BP Grand Entrance by Janis Mann, part of our continuing Jazz at LACMA series. An award-winning vocalist, Mann has been described by critics as "brilliant" and “one of the Southland’s finest jazz vocal artists.”

On Saturday, LACMA members can enjoy Member Previews of The Stowe Vase: From Ancient Art to Additive Manufacturing, all day in the Hammer Building. This exhibition presents three extraordinary objects side-by-side: the ancient Roman marble Stowe Vase, a second version in silver by a leading silversmith of the English Regency era, and a 2016 computer-designed, 3D-printed work by artist Michael Eden.

In the evening, LACMA’s Latin Sounds series begins for the summer with the Echo Park Project. Relax, picnic, and dance to a combination of original salsa material and hot '70s cover tunes in a casual, festival-like environment. This free, public performance begins at 5 pm in Hancock Park.

At 7 pm, LACMA Local members will meet up at Urban Light for Seasons, a scavenger-hunt-style exploration of the galleries back by popular demand. Join LACMA Local to RSVP for the next event!

On Sunday, meet at 12:30 in the L.A. Times Central Court to create art with the kids in your life at Andell Family Sundays—Fancy Pants, a fashion-inspired art workshop for budding artists and their families.

At 6 pm in the Bing Theater, as part of the ongoing Sundays Live series, take in the contemporary sounds of Panic Ensemble, whose performances have been described as “exciting,” “virtuosic,” and “irresistible. On the cutting edge of new music, their repertoire includes pieces by John Adams, Nico Muhly, and Jennifer Higdon.

On Monday, the weekend continues with a Target Free Holiday Monday! Visitors of all ages are invited to a free day at the museum, with bilingual tours, family sketching activity, and live music and dance by Burat Wangi: CalArts Balinese Gamelan, a group of musicians and dancers well known throughout the U.S., at 12:30 and 2:45 pm at the L.A. Times Central Court.

Tours this weekend include Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715–2015 at 11 am and South and Southeast Asian Art at 2 pm on Saturday; Highlights of the Museum: The Written Word in Art at 12 pm and 20th Century Latin American Art at 2 pm on Sunday; and Art of the Ancient World at 2 pm and Modern Art at 3 pm on Monday.
