The large screen Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden depicts a famous Chinese theme: an ideal or imaginary meeting between the leading scholars and statesmen of China's Song dynasty (960–1279). Various figures in Chinese scholars' robes are engaged in painting, calligraphy, poetry, and music. This subject was popular during the late Joseon dynasty in Korea, where it was adapted to a screen format. Come view the screen in person in the Korean Art galleries in the Hammer Building, Level 2!
