Luis Jiménez was a pioneering American sculptor whose work served as a powerful vehicle for Chicano identity and social critique. Created as a model for a public monument, Vaquero (1978) exemplifies his innovative use of fiberglass and automotive paint to rework the language of monumentality.

Now on view in the David Geffen Galleries in the presentation Picturing the American West—which examines romanticized visions of the West through contrasting colonial and Native-borne perspectives—Jiménez’s Vaquero sparks a vigorous dialogue with Frederic Remington’s The Bronco Buster, among other historic and contemporary works.

During the recent 40th annual Collectors Committee Weekend, members of LACMA's Collectors Committee and Contemporary@LACMA generously helped the museum acquire works of art including Luis Jiménez’s Vaquero. Information about these works will be published here on Unframed.
